Previous Thirteenth book of the year. The Harry Potter I always remembered the least, perhaps because it was the biggest of all of them and I think I only re-read it once. After the final events of Goblet of Fire this is when I feel the stories get appropriately darker and more gritty for our characters, way more then say the “dark” Prisoner of Azkaban. Order of the Phoenix feels like it really breaks out of the formula of the previous books, with so much taking place outside of the school as well as the constant sense of doom and sadness as everything falls apart in the wizarding world particularly within Hogwarts – everything feels at rock bottom in this book, but actually for that, I really really enjoyed it this time. The only thing that genuinely brought my enjoyment down was my constant fury every time Umbridge was present or did something, credit to JK for making her so real and frustrating. This and Goblet of Fire have been my two favourites so far. 📚#HarryPotter

Twelfth book of the year. A short break from Doctor Who books after two friends were raving about this book, apparently this book completely passed me by as a teen, I hadn’t heard of it at all until the short preview teaser for the film adaptation was released. The concept of travelling cities on tracks roaming the earth, with the beast that is London taking centre stage in this story was enough for me, throw in some spies and lots of London’s history being played with. I totally forgot throughout reading that it was a children’s book, it was such a gripping and fun read. Maybe I just need to read more children’s fiction, especially when it’s written in such a way that doesn’t patronise the target audience. I really loved this, I wouldn’t be surprised if this ends up being my favourite read of 2018. Will try and catch a few of the other books in the range after that ending too! In contrast, I rewarded myself by watching the full trailer for the film after I finished reading, and it reaaally didn’t do it for me. 📚

Eleventh book of the year. Another in my continuing series of ‘reading Doctor Who stories I know nothing about’ and this one was a treat! I knew nothing at all about The Savages, other then Steven leaving rather abruptly at the end. Going blind into this story I wasn’t sure what to expect at all, I had no idea of when or where the story was set and so the excitement of an opener where they’ve met such an advanced civilisation, and where the people know about the Doctor in advance was a great start! The Savages feels like a classic Doctor Who tale, with its subversion of the tribes contained within, particularly in this era of stories about Thals and Drahvins, and at various points I think it’s obvious where the story is going but it’s still thoroughly entertaining to let it pan out. After the energy transfer, I particularly enjoyed another character becoming the Doctor for a period, I can’t help but wonder (pure speculation) so near to the end of Bill Hartnell’s run that they were playing with some options before they came up with regeneration. I really enjoyed The Savages, way more then I thought I would, a perfect example of reading a Target novel before seeing the episode and loving my own interpretation of the visuals and characters, but I’ve left myself with not wanting to see the episode (if it’s ever found) because it’s quite wonderful in my mind. 📚
